Spot the change
Health Spot is the hot spot among many young people in Glasgow’s South East.
Specialist staff and counsellors advise on a wide range of health issues. From drug and alcohol abuse to sexual health and nutrition. The office at Ardencraig Street in Castlemilk is open for advice Monday to Friday.
Lee Anne Young first stepped through the doors seven years ago. Now 25, she is still closely involved in the centre and says: “At eighteen you have many personal questions on health issues. The moment I walked into Health Spot I was made to relax, given great assistance and practical advice.
“Health Spot is very popular and we have up to 50 in our drop in at the Jennieburn Centre on a Thursday night. One boy I know came with a drink problem and had no work prospects. After guidance he tackled his problem and Health Spot directed him to the local Glasgow South Regeneration Agency where he is on a construction course.
Ashley Ralston, 19, is at Cardonald College doing a Skills Development 2 course and she loves the friendly atmosphere. She says: “I love the massage and relaxation classes, it has soothing music. When I need information there is always someone to help me.”
OVERVIEW
Gary O’Connor, Manager at Health Spot is looking to develop the organisation. He says: “Health Spot develops and delivers needs led, community health services for young people. A key achievement in working with GCPP is the late night, weekend, addictions streetwork programme. This intervention accessed 713 contacts in the evaluation period. Health Spot will endeavor to ensure the sustainability and development of this service.”
